Ácenar Hot Mex Cool Bar

More than two decades ago, we took a chance on an empty concrete box tucked beneath the brand-new Hotel Valencia. At the time, this stretch of the San Antonio River Walk had no restaurants, just potential. Inspired by the hotel’s bold interiors, designed by famed Los Angeles modernist Mitchell Dodd, we envisioned a restaurant experience that would awaken the senses and reimagine what River Walk dining could be. Our mission was clear: create a place where space and flavor collided, offering a fresh take on regional Mexican cuisine rooted in Tex-Mex traditions. We drew inspiration from iconic designer Alexander Girard, whose 1960 restaurant La Fonda del Sol in New York City revolutionized the industry. That spirit of color, creativity, and cultural homage became the foundation for Ácenar’s beautifully designed space.
